Sing your own Song(s)! a Writing Workshop with Michael Mehan
Sing Your Own Song(s)!!
A songwriting workshop with Michael Mahan
This four-session workshop is for teens and young adults with an interest in
songwriting. Participants should have basic skills on keyboard or guitar, a notebook
(important), and a willingness to share ideas. We’ll approach songwriting as story
telling, learn by analyzing the work of some of the great songwriters of the 20th and
21st century, exploring what goes into making a great tune; it’s often different in
each tune. There are no rules. When you’re writing your song, you’re the boss.
We’ll look at where ideas come from, song structure, lyrics, rhyme schemes,
harmony and more. Each session will focus on a particular topic, with the final goal
being each participant performing their original song backed by a band of seasoned
musicians – guitar, bass, keys, drums – as appropriate to the tune.
Michael Mahan is a singer/songwriter currently working on his fifth album of
original music. Just prior to the pandemic he retired after 40 years in the graphic
design business, allowing more time for music! Over the years he’s played in
numerous Rock’n’Roll, Folk, Country, and Bluegrass bands.
Four Sundays in April, starting April 12th- May 3rd , 2 to 4 PM, Merrymeeting Arts Center Gallery.
The total class fee is $40 for four sessions, However Merrymeeting Arts Center runs on a pay what you can basis thanks to our generous doners.
