paper.cotton.linen.silk - Ruthanne Harrison
"This is work that is all about the tactile and texture: painting, block printing, collaging, stitching, working with fabric and plant dyes, interpreting artistic concepts into garment design, and vice-versa. My previous work of the last few years was mostly digital, 3D digital modeling, video, animation, augmented and virtual reality. Once those ideas were explored thoroughly, there was an ache to get back to the process of working with physical materials, using paints and dyes, paper and fabric, back to the feel of the real, to making a bit of a mess that couldn’t be deleted with a click. For me, the work celebrates a reconnection with the process of painting, designing, sewing, and making that I have loved since childhood. It celebrates moving forward, bringing human touch, with all of its innate flaws, to my art." Opening Reception: 4/19, 6pm-8pm Gallery Hours: April 13th, 20th & 27th, 10-2pm The Gallery is free and open to the public thanks to our generous donors. |
Entangled Rights- Sophia Shannon
Sophia Shannon, a senior at Mt Ararat High School has created a whale sculpture made from recycled fishing gear called Entangled Rights. The sculpture was inspired by Sophia’s passion for the environment and local marine life. Using her art abilities, she is able to represent current issues surrounding the dwindling Right Whale population due to lobster traps along the East Coast. After learning about the problems that were happening in the Gulf of Maine, she found someone giving away their collection of used fishing rope and went through many phases of sculptures. She ended up with a design that took a more 2-D approach and gathered a variety of multicolored fishing ropes from the knotted pile to better emphasize the piece’s expression and deeper meaning. She reached out to a local artist Anna Dibble, who created a recycled underwater exhibit: Sea Change. The exhibition captures a hanging right whale sculpture along with many other underwater creatures that were featured in the Bath Maine Maritime Museum. Mrs. Dibble agreed to mentor Sophia on her large 3-paneled rope sculpture to complete her High School’s Eagle Legacy Project. This piece will help with her upcoming steps in college where she is planning to major in wildlife ecology, and minor in fine art. Sophia hopes to spread awareness of the detrimental effects of fishing rope on sea life through her art and passion in this exhibition. May 4 & 5th 10am-2pm The Gallery is Free and open to the public, thanks to our generous donors. |
